Not so HEALTHY FOODS

As we all know we need to eat a healthy, balanced diet but some of the foods recognized as being healthy is far from it. Some of the foods we associate with the healthiest choices are some of the worst we can eat. These being in the quote unquote healthiest breakfast food category. Most of these foods are a sugary, processed mess! We can avoid the pitfalls of these disasters by being well-informed by reading the labels and understanding the correct amount of calories, fat, protein, carbs and sugar content of the food we eat.

Salt Reducing Plan

Just in time for Heart Health Month the American Heart Association has released a plan for reducing the salt intake for all of us. It calls for reducing the number of foods we eat with salty content over the recommended daily allowance of dietary salt. The recommended intake for salt is 1500 milligrams in a regular diet of 2000 calories a day. Some foods high in sodium will make your face feel puffy and your jeans feel tighter but help you become a risk for a heart attack or a stroke. Did you know according to the American Heat Association the average American consumes around 3500 milligrams of salt in a day? I had no idea that it was so much I thought it was a little lower but nowhere near that.

The case against soft drinks gets stronger.

I found this article in the local paper and wanted to show that Mom knows best.  At least mine did.

It appears that the case against soft drinks and sugary drinks just became overwhelming. Some new research has given doctors more leverage to link them to obesity. A study spanning several decades with over 30,000 American participants has given the first clear-cut evidence that sugary drinks cause obesity. The drinks interact with the weight genes in the body amplifying ones risk for obesity. This is over and above the normal weight gain due to heredity. And since most of us have these genes this becomes a significant finding.

Fitness starts with nutrition

The road to fitness starts with good nutrition, which also works with dieting. Nutrition and fitness go hand in hand meaning that when dieting you need to meet a balance between nutrition and exercise. When you exercise you burn off the nutrition you have taken in to your body. To much exercise and not enough nutrition to sustain your needs and your body will use too many calories at one time leaving you in “starvation mode” which will cause you to store fat. Too little exercise and too much nutrition will not use enough calories leaving you in “overload  mode” causing you to store fat for future use. When you achieve a balance between exercise and nutrition you burn off more calories and your body will use the fat stores slowly. Thus putting you in a mode where you use more fat than you use but not into ” starvation mode”. This is the hardest thing to perfect when dieting. Most people will achieve this for a short period and not over the long period of time needed to lose weight consistently.

Even in Brazil

While reading the Sunday Paper I came across an article which intrigued me. It seams that even in Brazil the skimpiest bikini capital in the world people are coming to the realization that obesity is alive and well. It appears that not only is the people in this country are concerned with obesity but apparently the people in Brazil are concerned about obesity also. It is starting to look like the third world countries are starting to need some dieting tips. So much so that the fashion world is beginning to  cater to the larger bikini crowd by adjusting the “string” of the suit a little bigger. This seems to attract a lot of business for one small company just starting out due to the lack of the larger style of suits.  This company was launched in 2010 and the line of suits have become a hit. These suits retail for $75 and are considered to be very expensive but are selling like crazy.

Limiting your cravings may be harder then you think.

Some studies suggest  that your brain has more to do with being obese than people realize.  These studies show that obese people may have a predisposition to be overweight due to not being able to control cravings in the brain. In other words when thin people are shown  the so called “naughty foods” (high sugar or fatty foods) they show more control and willpower than obese. The findings can be seen in cat scans of the brain in an area used for control and willpower. Obese people shown the same foods show readings in an area that shows temptation.  This is what is known as the “I wants”. The Question is do thin people have the ability to keep their willpower turned on or is it a case of “use it or loose it”? Do obese people have a disposition to turn off their willpower or is the ability to turn it on lost due to lack of use? The thin people who have used their willpower constantly to control their cravings may do it with out thinking about using it; while obese people who have the cravings may have to concentrate on using their willpower due to giving into the cravings more. So if you do not want to loose the ability to use your willpower USE IT!!!!!!!!!!
